Javiera Caballero is currently an at-large Durham City Council Member. She was appointed in January 2018 as the first Latinx council member, and has since worked diligently to amplify the voices of all the Durham residents she represents. This is her first campaign, and she is now running for her current seat to continue building on her work. Javiera has been advocating for shifts in policy that impact immigrant communities these include U Visas and language access for all Durham residents. She has been a steadfast promoter of Durham’s new Participatory Budgeting program, an ardent supporter of our affordable housing strategies, and a fierce advocate of local environmental policy.
Javiera came to the United States from Chile as a child, and her family eventually settled in Charlotte, North Carolina. She has been fortunate to have lived in several places across the United States from Boone, NC where she attended college to Chicago, IL. Javiera and her husband, Mark, are the parents of three fantastic kids. Along with her work on council, Javiera has been deeply involved in Durham Public Schools, from tutoring students to serving as PTA president. She is a former Montessori educator and worked as an education consultant for school districts across the country.
